Choose a website designer using a shared brief

Write down who your customers are, which services you want to promote and what a useful inquiry looks like. Include your actual service area, the pages you think you need and any deadline that affects the business. A remodeler serving Colorado Springs and nearby communities may need project details and estimate requests; a consultant may need a concise explanation of services and a consultation route.

Share the same brief with each provider. When the starting information differs, a cheaper quote may simply cover less work. If you are unsure about page count, ask each designer to explain the proposed structure and why it suits your customers.

Review the website designer’s work beyond screenshots

Open a portfolio example on your phone. Can you find the service, understand the offer and locate a contact route? Read a service page as well as the homepage. Ask what the designer actually contributed: design, development, writing, photography or an integration. Those are different responsibilities.

Ask whether each example is a live client site, an owner-operated project or a design concept. All can demonstrate different skills when labeled clearly. At Colo Web Studio, the homepage design concepts are illustrative, and FlipaCell is an affiliated, owner-operated project. Neither should be mistaken for an independent customer testimonial.

If someone shows a traffic or lead increase, ask how it was measured, over which dates and what else changed during that period. A visual redesign by itself does not prove a business result.

Compare website design scope and review stages

Before you choose a website designer, ask for a proposal that names the pages, functions, content responsibilities, review rounds and launch tasks. It should also say how additional work is priced. “SEO included” needs an explanation: page titles and technical setup are different from ongoing content creation, link building or advertising.

  • Who writes and approves the page content?
  • Who provides and licenses photographs?
  • How many revision rounds are included, and how is feedback collected?
  • Are forms, migration and redirects part of the project?
  • What happens if content or approvals arrive late?

Request a schedule tied to milestones rather than assuming a fixed launch date before the content is known. Choose one person in your business to consolidate feedback; conflicting instructions can slow even a well-planned project.

Understand ownership and ongoing costs

Ask whose account will hold the domain, hosting and paid licenses. Confirm the access you receive after payment and how you would move the website or work with another provider later. Also ask what is included in ongoing support and what remains your responsibility.

With our WordPress build packages, full website access is provided after final payment. Domain registration, compatible hosting and paid tools are separate costs. Optional maintenance is available for sites we build. Those details should be compared alongside the one-time build price, not discovered at handover.

Decide what local collaboration means to you

A Colorado Springs base can make regional context and communication easier to discuss, but an address alone does not tell you how the project will run. Ask who your contact is, how meetings happen and how feedback will be handled. If you need in-person meetings, confirm that before choosing a provider.

Be cautious about promised first-place Google rankings. Google itself says that no one can guarantee a #1 position. A useful discussion concerns the work, measurement and limits rather than a guaranteed outcome. Read Google’s guidance on choosing SEO help if search visibility is a major part of your project.

Before choosing: you should be able to explain what you are buying, who supplies what, when you review it, what you will own and what you will pay after launch.
